Why La Lana (Wool)?
I choose to make my lighting pendant with luxurious merino wool for its aesthetically and texturally warm natural qualities, but it has so many other attributes. It is naturally stain and dust resistant, fire resistant and it is one of the most effective sound dampening materials. This makes it an excellent choice for residential, hospitality, office and any other commercial applications. Lit up with a warm color LED bulb, the pendant gives a space a hygge sort of feel, whether hanging in a mountain or coastal setting, a child’s bedroom, hotel lobby, or intimate dining area.
Merino wool is 100% renewable and biodegradable when not spun with synesthetic materials and is also a natural air purifier. I choose to work with a unique super chunky New Zealand merino wool hand felted in Nepal by communities of women in workshops that emphasize the importance of skilled training and flexible employment opportunities. The natural dyes used meet Oeko Tex certifications, so are not harmful to touch, breathe or washed out in the environment.

Why Limited Production?
All pieces are handmade by me in my studio in the vibrantly creative community of Westport, Connecticut. Hand knitting and crocheting are time and care intensive and the end result is a thoughtful piece of crafted functional art. Each fixture is unique, even when made with the same yarn colors. Multiples will be made to order yarn from the same dye lot, however with natural dyes there can still be color variation. It is the beauty of the materials and process.
How is The Giant Chunky Knit Lighting Pendant (GCKLP) customizable?

Pendants are made to order in a variety of colors, however ask about limited availability of pieces in addition to what is currently shown on website.
Yarn color choices for customization are based on available yarns.

All fixtures, even those Available, are completed with metal hardware in buyer's choice of finish (rod and canopies). Finishes currently available: unfinished brass, antique brass, white powder coat, black powder coat, brushed nickel, polished nickel.
Rod length to meet the buyer’s hanging specifications. Rod lengths above 24" will add additional cost.

Frame is currently available only in brass and can be seen slightly in places through the stitches.

A ski trip to Vail in the winter of 2022 inspired me to experiment combining to look of knitting stitches with crocheting techniques in an unconventional application that resulted in The Giant Chunky Knit Lighting Pendant.
Imagining and creating this pendant came about organically by way of my professional work as an Interior Designer, trying to solve lighting and acoustical challenges in an aesthetically beautiful and modern way, by using the craft of knitting taught to me by my mother when I was a teenager, and by following my own teenage daughter's lead by teaching myself how to crochet.
There is nothing “granny” about these pendants, but there is also nothing "fast homeware" about them either. Each individual color combination influences their vibe, as well as the slow process of hand stitching makes one appreciate the process and value of creating unique, timeless pieces of functional art.
